This has been a common question among students and teachers. Originally
I wanted to count term 3 for 10-20% (for Chemistry 11/12 students) and 33% (for Science 8H students) of the school year based on how much the
student has completed. However, some students started to freak out and were
afraid of a drop in final average and made a strategic decision to not do any
work and stopped participating to avoid a drop of final average. A decision has
been made. Your final mark will be based on your completed terms 1 and
2. I will report an average assignment mark and an average test/quiz
mark on what was completed during the remote learning period after spring break
in the comments section of term 3. This will indicate to the student and
family what was accomplished during term 3, and will help them navigate in the
future on what has to be prepared for future studies in chemistry.
If you didn't complete any work during term 3 for whatever reason, it is
highly recommended that you make up the work on your own in order to
prepare for the next level chemistry or science course.
- For Chemistry 12 students,
you will need the remaining Chapter 5: Applications of Acids, Bases and Salts
and Chapter 6: Oxidation-Reduction for first year university Chemistry.
- For Chemistry 11 students, you will need to know how to solve stoichiometry problems
and use molarity and have strong math skills as the minimum for success in
Chemistry 12. However, you will also need to know the periodic
trends (Chapter 6) and the properties of solutions (Chapter 7) and some
basic organic chemistry (Chapter 8) for first year university
Chemistry.
- For Science 8H students, you will need the optics unit for senior physics and biology 9 unit (Chapters 4: DNA and 5: Cell Division and Asexual Reproduction) for continuing Science 9/10 biology 9 and10 units (Sexual Reproduction and Genetics)
If you are a border line student between two letter grades, I can use
the test average completed in term 3 to bump you up. If you didn't
achieve a passing average for terms 1 and 2, you should have contacted me to
find out what you can do to achieve a pass. I expect that all of you know
how to sign in to MyEd to find your term 1 and term 2 averages and calculate
your average for term 1 and 2 ~ that's your final mark average.
If you have any further concerns, contact me. I
hope this will help clarify whether you should participate in the remote
learning that's been happening since spring break.
